Blocksburg to Supply Market
This article appeared in The Humboldt Beacon on April 3, 1920.
Within the near future a material decrease in the price of poultry and eggs will probably be noted as many of the ladies of the Blocksburg section are going into the chicken business pretty heavily. Among those who are going in for fancy chickens are Mesdames D. H. Prior, Oliver Cooper, E. G. Kay, Sarah Johnson and Chas. Martin. They contemplate supplying the San Francisco poultry and egg market. So great is the enthusiasm of the ladies for the new industry that even husbands have been inveigled into lending their assistance. Just a few days ago Dug Prior was seen building a chicken corral. In about two weeks the round-up will be held, that is, if cats are not too previous.
All the houses built for the chickens are very artistic. Oliver Cooper has furnished dormer windows for the new house on his place while the chickens on the Prior ranch can spend their leisure on a porch which completely surrounds the domicile. With care and foresight, Mrs. Johnson has placed her chicken houses on the side hill where the inmates can enjoy a nice sunny exposure. The brown leghorn breed of chicks seem to hold first place at present, the possibly other varieties may be raised to some extent.
Much interest is being manifested by many throughout that section, and reports of the enterprise has reached the valley.
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Cox Friday, March 26, 1920. Both mother and daughter are doing nicely.
A few of the neighbors gathered Saturday evening at the Ben Renick home. The affair was in the nature of a farewell as Mr. and Mrs. Renick have returned to their ranch after spending the winter in town. Before good-byes were said delicious refreshments were served to the guests who were: Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Prior, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Cooper, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hosler, Miss Lola Cooper and Geo. Kline.
Mrs. J. C. Albee and children return today to their ranch after spending the winter months in Blocksburg.
Mrs. J. S. Madden and family have been ill for some time past. The children have been confined to their home with measles.
During the past month or more Blocksburg has been having a siege of measles. Among those who are convalescent are Mrs. Thos. Murphy and daughter Velma.
