Church
Contributed by Beverley Windbigler of Blocksburg

Although Blocksburg officially became a town when the post office was established in 1877, the first church wasn't built until 1899. It was doomed from the start. Built by a Methodist minister named William Jensen, it was destroyed by fire the night before the dedication and before any services were ever held. With the help of the community, however, it was rebuilt on the present site and dedicated September 8, 1901.

Blocksburg ChurchFor several years there was a minister in residence at the church. It was eventually sold to the Presbytery of the Redwoods. Services ended in 1957 with two congregations sharing the building. By then the building had fallen into disrepair.

In June, 1966, the Blocksburg Town Hall Association purchased the building and the tedious restoration process began. Community volunteers and Town Hall members slowly made progress over the next 20 years, donating their time and labor. Fundraisers - such as a cookbook created from the recipe files of town's best cooks - helped cover building supply costs.

The work was finally completed and a Restoration Celebration and Rededication of the church was held on June 22, 1986. The community uses the building primarily for weddings and funerals.

We have a few pictures of the church on this site from these years: 1900, 1920, and 2000.
